I. Schéma complet de classification

II. Les trois cas de base

1. $\lim_{x \to \infty} f(x) = a$

2. $\lim_{x \to \infty} f(x) = \infty$

On calcule $\displaystyle\lim_{x \to \infty} \frac{f(x)}{x}$, puis selon le résultat :

3. $\lim_{x \to a} f(x) = \infty$

III. Étude détaillée du cas $\lim f(x) = \infty$

Lorsque $\displaystyle\lim_{x \to \infty} f(x) = \infty$, on calcule $\displaystyle\lim_{x \to \infty} \frac{f(x)}{x}$ :

Cas A — $\displaystyle\lim_{x \to \infty} \frac{f(x)}{x} = 0$

Cas B — $\displaystyle\lim_{x \to \infty} \frac{f(x)}{x} = \infty$

Cas C — $\displaystyle\lim_{x \to \infty} \frac{f(x)}{x} = a$ (avec $a \neq 0$)

Dans ce cas, on calcule $\displaystyle\lim_{x \to \infty} \big[f(x) - ax\big]$ :

  • Si $\displaystyle\lim_{x \to \infty} \big[f(x) - ax\big] = b$ (avec $b$ réel), alors la droite $y = ax + b$ est une asymptote oblique à $(C_f)$.
  • Si $\displaystyle\lim_{x \to \infty} \big[f(x) - ax\big] = \infty$, alors $(C_f)$ admet une branche parabolique de direction $y = ax$.

IV. Tableau de synthèse

Limite initiale Calcul intermédiaire Conclusion
$\lim_{x \to a} f(x) = \infty$ — Asymptote verticale $x = a$
$\lim_{x \to \infty} f(x) = a$ — Asymptote horizontale $y = a$
$\lim_{x \to \infty} f(x) = \infty$ $\lim \dfrac{f(x)}{x} = 0$ Branche parabolique $(Ox)$
$\lim \dfrac{f(x)}{x} = \infty$ Branche parabolique $(Oy)$
$\lim \dfrac{f(x)}{x} = a \neq 0$ $\lim [f(x) - ax] = b$
→ asymptote oblique $y = ax + b$
$\lim [f(x) - ax] = \infty$
→ branche parabolique $y = ax$

V. Méthode pratique

Étape 1 : calculer $\displaystyle\lim_{x \to \pm\infty} f(x)$ (ou $\lim_{x \to a} f(x)$).

Exercice 1 — Asymptote verticale

Soit $f(x) = \dfrac{1}{x - 3}$. Déterminer les branches infinies de $(C_f)$.

$\displaystyle\lim_{x \to 3^+} f(x) = +\infty$ et $\displaystyle\lim_{x \to 3^-} f(x) = -\infty$.

$\displaystyle\lim_{x \to +\infty} f(x) = +\infty$.

$\displaystyle\lim_{x \to +\infty} \frac{f(x)}{x} = \lim_{x \to +\infty} (x + 3) = +\infty$.

Exercice 3 — Asymptote oblique

Soit $f(x) = 2x + 1 + \dfrac{1}{x}$. Montrer que $y = 2x + 1$ est asymptote oblique.

$\displaystyle\lim_{x \to \pm\infty} \frac{f(x)}{x} = \lim_{x \to \pm\infty} \left(2 + \frac{1}{x} + \frac{1}{x^2}\right) = 2$.

$\displaystyle\lim_{x \to \pm\infty} [f(x) - 2x] = \lim_{x \to \pm\infty} \left(1 + \frac{1}{x}\right) = 1$.

Donc $y = 2x + 1$ est asymptote oblique à $(C_f)$ au voisinage de $\pm\infty$.

Exercice 4 — Branche parabolique $y = ax$

Soit $f(x) = x + \sqrt{x}$.

$\displaystyle\lim_{x \to +\infty} f(x) = +\infty$.

$\displaystyle\lim_{x \to +\infty} \frac{f(x)}{x} = \lim_{x \to +\infty} \left(1 + \frac{1}{\sqrt{x}}\right) = 1$.

$\displaystyle\lim_{x \to +\infty} [f(x) - x] = \lim_{x \to +\infty} \sqrt{x} = +\infty$.
